International travellers worldwide have long taken the opportunity to check out the duty-free opportunities at the airport for a last-minute gift or maybe a bottle of something special to imbibe at home.
Not only do airport duty-free shops offer souvenirs which help to promote the home country, but they also showcase classic brands that are unlikely to be seen at the usual retail outlets.

The Phoenix-plan for the Hua Hin Airport includes such a duty-free facility to ensure that international passengers, either on arrival or prior to departure, will have the opportunity to purchase a memento of Hua Hin. Choices will include wines and spirits, but also confectionery, perfumes and travel accessories.

Instead of taking home yet another cheap t-shirt, there will be the opportunity to select something more exotic and very Hua Hin. For example, how about some locally produced Monsoon Valley wine, durian flavoured confectionary or tea, or even caviar; that could raise some eyebrows!

Behind the soon to be realised ‘Phoenix-Duty-Free’ plan is Justin Frizelle, a very experienced operator in this space, especially in the supply and distribution of wine and spirits across Asia under the Singapore based ‘Drinks & Co.’ brand. His 25 years of Asian-based experience includes being General Manager of Diageo’s China JV; 7 years as GM of Diageo’s South Asia Markets and Managing Director of SE Asia for Bacardi.
We caught up with Justin during his time in Hua Hin with preparations for Phoenix Duty-free well advanced. He was ensuring that early international travellers will have all their duty-free needs met, but also that Phoenix Duty-free is fitted out to be a real boutique shopping experience.
Duty-free goods will be available not only in the airport terminal outlet but also with a downtown connection and premises where pre-departure purchases can be made. Phoenix Aviation Thailand CEO John Laroche says “Justin has an unparalleled understanding of what makes a great duty-free experience to ensure that Phoenix Duty-free at the Hua Hin Airport will be a boutiques outlet to match the best.”
