AIRPORT UPGRADE FOR HUA HIN TO RIVAL OTHER THAILAND DESTINATIONS

An analysis of the importance of the Hua Hin airport as a tourism demand generator has been published as a ‘Hotel Market Update’ by C9 Hotelworks, a globally awarded hospitality consultancy based in Phuket focusing on hotel, branded residential, real estate and mixed-use developments across Asia.

The report states that unlike other Thai destinations that are heavily dependent on the international market, Hua Hin has been strongly leveraged in the domestic market.  Pre-Covid, 74% of the visitors originated domestically. This surpassed destinations such as Pattaya, Phuket and Bangkok.

Family-friendly hotels captured domestic demand as a weekend and holiday getaway for greater Bangkok with a robust demand, particularly on Friday and Saturday nights leading to occupancy of around 90%.

The airport became an important demand generator with passenger growth in 2018 and 2019 due to flights between Hua Hin and Chiang Mai/Udon Thani which saw a passenger growth of 233%.

Looking forward, the report comments on the importance of a planned airport upgrade and expansion with potential routes to China, South Korea and India as well as the completion of the dual track rail line.

Meanwhile the importance of attracting international airlines to include Hua Hin in their flight itineraries can not be overstated.

Phoenix Aviation, the airport business partner, is continuing to lay the foundations for future international travel to Hua Hin airport, albeit dependent on the reduction of current Covid-related restrictions.
