LIMITED ASTRAZENICA VACCINATIONS OFFERED A FEW SETECT COUNTRIES; BUT ONLY THIS SUNDAY!

Beginning yesterday (Friday), in the late afternoon/evening, several embassies in Bangkok have offered registrations for their citizens to receive AstraZenica Covid-19 vaccinations on Sunday.  The embassies concerned are Australia, New Zealand, USA and Canada.

Although there may be other embassies making this offer, that has not come to our notice.  Austria has been reported as one such country. The UK embassy Facebook page does not mention the offer.  Strangely the offer is not currently mentioned on the Canadian Embassy Facebook page or by the Ambassador in a video message posted around 6 pm yesterday.

The embassies concerned all require registration by this morning (Saturday) and state that the vaccinations will be available on Sunday in Bangkok.  The Australian and New Zealand embassy give the same specific location in Bang Sue.

The offer in each case states that the embassy has been ‘offered the opportunity by the Royal Thai Government for a limited number of their citizens to receive the AstraZeneca vaccination on Sunday’, or wording to that effect.

The number of vaccinations available has not been provided with registered recipients to be advised on Saturday (today) by email if they have been ‘’successful’’.

In the past these embassies have all proclaimed their unwillingness to be involved in vaccinations for their citizens in Thailand, unlike their Chinese and French counterparts.  That message was reiterated by the Canadian Ambassador in her video message yesterday.

The circumstances surrounding this development have not been provided.  There has been a variety of reactions from expats with some offering congratulations, other bemoaning the short notice and difficulties in registering or travel concerns for those living outside Bangkok. Some notices of successful and unsuccessful applications have already been received.

That concern includes messages such as “do you (the embassy) know that there are more Australian citizens who live outside of Bangkok than in it? Encouraging Australian citizens to travel to Bangkok in the middle of a pandemic that is centered in the capital for a shot and then travel back without provincial quarantine is a crime. You shouldn’t be encouraging anyone to travel to COVID central at this point.”

Citizens from other countries are also questioning why their government is silent on the offer.

This new development may be welcomed by those who have won the vaccination lottery and will get their jab on Sunday.  For others it just adds to their frustrations about the vaccination roll-out, both with the Thai and their own governments; confusion reigns!
