HUA HIN’S WASTE DISPOSAL CRISIS – MUNICIPALITY PLANNING QUESTIONED

Mr. Nopporn Wutthikul, Mayor of Hua Hin, with a bevy of municipal officers, has faced the music by attending a meeting of disgruntled residents living nearby to the municipality’s temporary waste disposal site near Soi 102, less than 3 kilometres inland from the Bluport Resort Mall.

The Mayor explained the reason for the use of this site, which follows the end of a 20 year contract at a site nearby the Thanarat army camp at Pranburi .  The lease cannot be renewed and no suitable replacement site has been found. He said an alternative site in the Bor Fai area was also considered.

Further efforts will be made to reduce the issues facing residents, including covering the garbage.  Spraying deodorising and sanitising chemicals will continue.

The mayor has agreed to attend a follow up meeting on 20th July.

The extent of residents’ ire was evident by the numbers attending the meeting, both Thai and foreign expats, who say there was no prior consultation or information about the use of this site adjoining their homes, the rubbish trucks just began to arrive one day.

Comments made leading up to the meeting, may be seen below.

“The “powers that be” should have been looking for a new place months and months ago! They all knew their last contract was expiring 1st July.  Last minute Thailand as usual!”

“Have been smelling something foul for a few days now. Just found this trash dump located about 200-300 metres from my home in Baan Araya. Locating a garbage dump this close to a residential area ?! Not good planning.”

“Smell is bad when it rains and depends on wind direction; houses are on the route, with the smell of many garbage truck during the day when they drive past.  Sometimes there is also dirty water from the garbage, it stinks and attracts flies.”

“Was away for two days and this s***t heap greeted me upon return. It’s 300 metre’s away from where I live at Suk Sabai 3.  Truly and utterly p***d off.  I lived on the edge of a nature reserve back home now I live next to a s***t heap!!!!!”

“This is the new dump site for all of Hua Hin, dozens and dozens of truck a day, 400 metres from my nose.”

Reports have also surfaced recently about the absence of bulk bins in other areas where householders had previously deposited their waste.  Now the bins have disappeared however mounds of rubbish remain at the locations.
