The International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) executive board has proposed Brisbane host the 2032 summer Olympics.  Brisbane had been the preferred host, chosen in February, and the board’s proposal now goes to the IOC session before the Tokyo Olympics next month.

The 2024 Olympics will be held in Paris, with the 2028 Games in Los Angeles.

“It is in the hands of IOC members to vote now on July 21,” IOC President Thomas Bach said.  “This commission looked in depth in all aspects of Brisbane 2032 … as well as the strong support across the entire political spectrum in Australia,” he said.

Chair of the Future Host Commission for the Games of the Olympiad, Kristin Kloster Aasen, said Brisbane 2032’s case aligned with “social and economic development plans”.

“The project centres on delivering the best possible conditions for sport and the athletes in a sport loving country with proven experience in hosting successful major sports events such as the Commonwealth Games in 2018,” Ms Aasen said.

“The commission is satisfied that the guarantees provided by Brisbane 2032 are comprehensive and thorough.  “They demonstrate a strong support by all three levels of government and address all relevant matters.”

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said she would be calling the Olympics “Brisbane Queensland 2032”.  She said she was confident the “finishing line is just in front”, but said she would respect the Olympic committee’s decision regardless.  “Today is an incredibly proud day, something I never thought I would see in my lifetime,” Ms Palasczuk said.

The Premier said hosting the games would boost tourism, bring in $8 billion in infrastructure upgrades and create more than 130,000 jobs.

Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the council was “very hopeful” ahead of the vote.  “It’s like we’re in a marathon and we’ve turned the final corner … you can see the crowd cheering, you can see the finish line … it’s just one month away,” he told ABC Radio Brisbane.

The Gabba has been proposed as the main stadium should Queensland host the 2032 Games.

Several cities and countries had publicly expressed an interest in the 2032 Games including Indonesia, Budapest, China, Doha and Germany’s Ruhr valley among others.

But in a new process that does not openly pit cities against each other, Brisbane had already moved ahead of any rivals in February, having won praise from the IOC.

If Brisbane is elected, as expected, it would become the third Australian city after Melbourne in 1956 and Sydney in 2000 to host the summer Olympics.

“Sport is seen by many governments around the world as essential to the long-term development of their countries and regions,” Mr Bach said.  “The Brisbane 2032 Olympic project shows how forward-thinking leaders recognise the power of sport as a way to achieve lasting legacies for their communities.”

The IOC overhauled its bidding rules in 2019 to reduce costs and make the process easier for cities.  There are no official candidate cities campaigning ahead of the vote as has been the case in the past.  Instead, the IOC puts the preferred host to a vote at its session.

The Olympic events are to be held across south-east Queensland at more than 30 venues in Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Logan, Ipswich and Redlands.  It is also the first time the IOC has shown interest in a region, rather than a single city.
