A routine helicopter flight with National Park officers surveying forest conditions at Kaeng Krachan National Park yesterday (Wednesday 19th May) was the target of gunfire though fortunately without damage.

The helicopter was around 15 metres above the ground when two people, a man and a woman, were seen near to take a rifle from a small hut at the edge of a forested area before shots were clearly heard by those on board.

The helicopter then immediately flew from the scene and landed around seven kilometres away without further incident.  An inspection of the helicopter did not reveal any damage.

Urgent investigations will now be undertaken to discover those responsible, as the incident may have resulted in a tragic outcome.

Ongoing aerial surveillance and ground patrols are required to guard against park invasion and to reduce the poaching of protected wildlife.
